A.R. Penck & Frank Breidenbruch Collection
An Artistic Legacy Between Signs, Stone, and Time
This private collection traces the exceptional collaboration between A.R. Penck (Ralf Winkler, 1939–2017) and Frank Breidenbruch, spanning more than forty years.
Beginning in the early 1980s, their close and enduring personal and artistic partnership gave rise to a unique body of work deeply rooted in the history of contemporary art.
No other artist worked with A.R. Penck for such a long period, across such a broad range of media, or with such intensity as Frank Breidenbruch. Together, they brought visions to life through word, paper, stone, metal, and spirit – a creative universe marked by artistic energy, cultural significance, and biographical depth.
The collection includes:
- Etchings, engravings, drypoint prints (Kaltnadeldrucke)
- Sculptures in wood, stone, and bronze
- Paintings, drawings, reworked catalogues
- Photographs, letters, signed objects
- Architectural-sculptural concepts such as Centro Spirituale
A particularly significant highlight of the collection is the Incontro series, created by Frank Breidenbruch in dialogue with the artistic legacy of Penck. Incontro (“encounter” in Italian) distills the essence of their decades-long collaboration – the meeting of two creative worlds, expressed in a visual language that is both free and deeply symbolic.
Part of the collection remains in private ownership, acquired directly from Frank Breidenbruch’s personal holdings. It is complemented by rare archival material, including photographs, press articles (e.g., WN Magazin 10/90), and original work documents.
Purpose and vision:
To preserve this important chapter of German post-war art, document it in depth, and present it to the public – whether through a permanent museum installation, a curated traveling exhibition, or a scholarly catalogue project.
